Wasn't Einstein's 1905 paper just an example?

No. Einstein's 1905 paper was his landmark paper that established Special Relativity.

This question arises because so few people refer to Einstein's 1905 method of creating the equations. Today, I believe that many rely on other derivations that either contain their own errors or inherently assume that Einstein's equations are correct.
